THE REASON DOGS DON’T NEED CARBOHYDRATES IN DOG TREATS

Since the fat and protein in MEAT are satisfactory to preserve normal blood glucose levels. Meat contains all of the enzymes, proteins, vitamins and minerals that one’s dog needs.

The pancreatic enzyme - amylase is found in the saliva of omnivores and herbivores to allow us to process plant matter. It is not observed in a carnivore’s saliva, and is not identified in domestic dog’s saliva.

The Amylase enzyme helps in converting starch into maltose sugar for energy. Typically in humans as foods enters our mouth, amylase is present to begin the digestion process. Though it doesn’t have very long before it being washed with food into the stomach. Once you have swallowed your food the amalyse release gets turned off because it can’t perform in high acid environments of the stomach. You may observe that as well as dogs not having this enzyme in their saliva, their stomach acid is about three times stronger  than humans and for good reason. That is why it is made to process bone and huge chunks of meat and not plants.

With no amalyse, humans like dogs, could not absorb carbohydrates. Humans convert carbohydrate into sugar largely in the small intestine. The approach goes: pancreas creates amalyse to convert the starch in carbohydrates into sugar (maltose). Next another enzyme, maltase, converts the maltose sugar into glucose, a vital energy sugar in the blood that oversees several systems including the brain, liver and so on.

Human’s intestines are 20 feet long, and the undigested food and waste usually takes between one day and several days to be finally expelled from the body. While amalyse is present in a dog’s duodenum and small intestine, a medium sized dog’s intestine is only five feet long. This shortened time that undigested food remains in their intestine will not usually offer it adequate time to break down plant matter (whereas the acid in its stomach has mostly digested the meat already). While a dog could take from ten hours to a day to get rid of the waste or undigested food, if it has taken something like beans (and all whole grains) will pass through untouched in a matter of hours.
